A Focal Point

It has been a crazy, crazy week for me I haven't had much time to do anything. The kitchen floor I wanted to install this past weekend was a success!! I actually got Chris to help install it. I don't have any pictures to share with you yet because my house is a mess and I haven't had time to clean it. I will clean, clean, clean and get some before and after pictures for you as soon as possible. But for now enjoy some of this inspiration!

Besides a large picturesque window with a view of the ocean as a focal point in a room, a fireplace can also make a rooms top list of great focal points just like in these spaces.

Get Inspired- Dining rooms

Formal dining spaces are not very popular anymore, more and more families would prefer not to have  this space included in their homes. I personally like them (if there is space for them in the house). I also do like the eat-in kitchen areas but there is nothing like having a family get together and eating dinner in the dining room, especially on holidays. (plus I think there is some great dining chairs out there!! Like all the ones below)

I love this space! the colour combination is so beautiful. I love the chandelier and of course I think the chairs are awesome! I wish I had some chairs like this!

This space is neutral allowing the fabrics on the chairs to shine. I love the pops of pink flowers it really brings the pink in the fabric out.

I love, love this dining room! everything about it is gorgeous, I can't stop looking at it. From the wall murals, wall paneling, the colour combination and of course the chairs! Love them!! Another element I like about these dining rooms are the pedestal tables, I really like the one in this photo and the two below.

This is such a nice looking country dining space. I absolutely love the way they did the shelves on the back wall with the long table extended from one wall to the other, it is so different then doing a hutch or china cabinet.
Source: Got this from Pinterest I'm not sure where it originally came
from. Please let me know if you know.
 Love these chairs!!

This space has such a nice colour scheme, the grey looks so nice in a dining room, such a gorgeous table as well.

This is another grey dining room that I love! The wainscoting is really nice ( I'm a big fan of it) The two benches also stuck out at me in this space, I think it is a great idea and it still has a contemporary look.

What do you think of formal dining rooms? do you like them? or could you live without them?

To Do, To Do, To Do!!

I decided that I would share with you my list of renovations to my house that I have to complete before we put the house up for sale. It will probably also help me to keep track and move along with what needs to be done. Since I have a lot to do I thought I would break it up a little, so today I will share the list for the already started projects and then on another day I will share the things that need to be started still.
Powder Room

  • Grout floor
  • Install the sink
  • Install towel bar
  • Buy and hang mirror
  • buy and install baseboards
  • Add accessories
Basement
  • Empty out useless stuff
  • Put floor transition piece in
  • Buy and install baseboards
  • Move some furniture from upstairs down there
Yesterday I started a new project as well, now I know what your probably thinking why don't you finish the ones that are already started. Well I need help from C to do a lot of the things in the basement so they will have to wait until he is ready to do them or until Britt wants to help me? (wink wink nudge nudge)
Anyway the next project that I started today is tackling the kitchen/eating area. Here is a photo of what it looks like...This is from when we bought the house almost 3 years ago, so there has been a few changes which you will see as I update you.

Kitchen

Eating Area
Pretty ugly... But I plan to give it a little face lift while trying not to spend a lot of money. Since I have lived here the cabinets have warn a lot they are warped and don't close together and the paint is chipping and peeling everywhere from it being painted so many times. The floor is just awful, it is stained and dirty, from the moment I walked in to this house I knew it had to go. O and don't you just love my almond coloured fridge and stove! they gotta go!! Yesterday I started working on this space I pulled out all the baseboards and today I went out and bought some new flooring (you will have to wait till it is laid this weekend to see it....I could be dreaming when I say this weekend but fingers crossed). Anyway I also have talked with my grandfather and he is going to cut me some new cabinet doors, so here is my list for the kitchen.

Kitchen
  • Install new flooring
  • Buy and install baseboards
  • Sand cabinets
  • Paint cabinets and new doors
  • Install new doors with new hinges and knobs
  • Buy white appliances off Kijiji
I believe that is all to my lists for these rooms, I could be forgetting something so if I remember I will add it to the list. Next time I will share with you my bathroom and bedroom and possibly the living room. Well wish me luck!!

DIY Nightstand #2

I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend! We had a blast! it was nice to get out of town and sit on the beach all weekend.

Before we left I finally got around to sanding the Value Village nightstand's and today I painted one of them.

Left: Before Right: After

I painted them white for now. My room is chocolate and cream colours, I didn't want to commit to those colours on the nightstand's because hopefully we will be moving and I have no idea what my new room could look like so white is the best option for now. What do you think? Much better then before right. I knew they had potential!

Highjacked! Easy Jambalaya

Hi friends. It's Britt.

As you know, Amanda is away for the weekend... so naturally I am going to highjack her blog... it's what big sisters do!

You may have read a few times that Amanda, Nikki & I get together every Thursday night for dinner & Grey's Anatomy... in the summer it's more like dinner & shopping.... but let's not go there ;)

Amanda is usually the one to come up with the recipe ideas and suggestions {expect for last week when I suggested the very spicy Tuna Pad Thai}. When we first started our Thursday night tradition, almost 3 years ago, one of the very first things she every made was Jambalaya.... this recipe instantly became one of our favourites...

Easy Jambalaya
adapted from the Diary Farmers of Canada

Ingredients
1 cup (250 mL) cooked, whole-grain Minute rice
4 oz (125 g) cheddar cheese turkey sausages
3 stalks celery, sliced
1 onion, chopped
6 large white mushrooms
1 each, small sweet green and red pepper, chopped
1 can stewed Italian flavoured tomatoes, drained
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 tbsp Cajun seasoning
1 cup milk

Method
1. Cook rice according to Minute Rice box instructions.
2. Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add sausage, celery, mushrooms, onion and peppers; cook, stirring, for 5 min. Stir in tomatoes.
3. Whisk flour and Cajun seasoning into milk; gradually stir into skillet. Bring just to a simmer, stirring often. Reduce heat to medium-low; cover and simmer gently for 10 minutes.
4. Stir in cooked rice. Remove from heat and let stand for 5 minutes, to allow rice to absorb the flavours. Serve hot!

Makes 4 servings.

So there you have it folks! A little highjacking never hurt anyone! ;)

Family Getaway

Source: Family photo
We are off to hubby's families cottage this weekend up in Penetanguishene, for some fun in the sun! No computers or Internet so I hope everyone has a great weekend!!! Enjoy the sun!

Natures Colours- The Peacock

Nature has such beautiful colour everywhere, it is hard not to get inspired! From flowers, landscapes to animals the colour combinations are endless! One of my favourite schemes can be found on a peacock, it has such a beautiful colour combination. The colours usually consist of blues, greens and sometimes purples, this creates a analogous colour scheme using all cool colours.
